In-house design, source & build
Local design-build
Birmingham was built well the first time. The job is to bring it forward without flattening it.
Most of the housing stock here dates from the 1920s through the 1950s - brick Tudors, white Colonials, and Cape Cods in Quarton Lake Estates, Poppleton Park, and Torry. They were built with materials and detailing that would be prohibitively expensive to reproduce today.
That's the opportunity and the constraint. A renovation that ignores the original trim profiles, floor transitions, and window proportions reads as recent forever. One that respects them reads as though the house was always this way.
We design, source, and build every project in-house, so there's no gap between what was drawn and what gets built — and no one to point at when the two don't match.

Remodeling a Birmingham Home: What to Expect
01
Older homes hide surprises
Many Birmingham homes date from the 1920s through the 1950s. When we open walls we often find plaster and lath, old wiring, galvanized pipe and framing that has moved over the decades. We plan for this during design so it doesn't turn into a surprise halfway through the job.
02
Interior work still needs permits
Moving a sink, adding a shower, rewiring a kitchen or adding a basement bath means building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical permits through the City of Birmingham. We pull every permit and schedule every inspection, so you never deal with the building department.
03
Design comes first
A kitchen, bath or basement starts with one to three months of design development. We settle layout, cabinetry, finishes and pricing before demolition starts. A fixed plan is what keeps the schedule and budget where we promised.
04
Your home stays livable
Most of our clients live at home during construction. We protect your floors, seal the work area for dust, run negative air and clean up every day. You also get a written update every week.
05
One team from start to finish
Every trade except plumbing, electrical and HVAC is Maxwell's own crew, and our licensed partners handle those three. Your designer and project manager stay with you from the first sketch to the final walkthrough, and the work is backed by a five year workmanship warranty.
Requirements change. Confirm current specifics with the Birmingham Building Department or the Planning Department before relying on any of the above.

We don't reface cabinets
Every kitchen we build starts with new cabinetry, which puts our smallest Birmingham kitchens around $65,000 and most of them well above that. If refacing or a cosmetic refresh is what your house needs, a specialist will serve you better and cost you far less, and we're happy to point you toward one.
We're the right fit when the project involves custom cabinetry, layout changes, a house with complications behind the plaster, or a homeowner who would rather deal with one team than coordinate a designer, an architect, and a builder.

Birmingham faq
How long does a kitchen or bathroom remodel take in Birmingham?
Most projects take 14 to 16 weeks of construction after one to three months of design. A single bathroom often takes less time. A full kitchen with layout changes takes longer.
Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen or bathroom in Birmingham?
Yes, if the work touches plumbing, electrical, mechanical or structure. Cosmetic updates like paint may not need one. We handle every permit and inspection as part of the project.
Can we live in the house while you remodel?
Usually, yes. We seal off the work area, control dust and clean up daily. For a kitchen remodel we help you set up a temporary kitchen so daily life keeps going.
What does a kitchen or bath actually cost in Birmingham?
Kitchens here typically run $65,000 to $250,000 and up, bathrooms $18,000 to $160,000 and up, depending on scope. We publish full ranges by tier on our cost guides rather than making you ask.
Does living in a Birmingham historic district affect an interior remodel?
Historic district review focuses on exterior changes. Most kitchen, bath and basement work is interior, so it goes through normal permits. If your project changes windows, doors or anything visible from outside, we'll tell you early and plan around the review.
Do you provide interior design and cabinetry?
Yes. Our design team handles layout, finishes, lighting and fixtures, and we build with Dura Supreme cabinetry in the framed Crestwood and frameless Bria lines. You work with one team from design through installation.
