Joe Guadagnino founded Maxwell Building Services in 2014 on a belief he had formed the hard way: that the team which designs a home should be the team that builds it.
Almost every renovation horror story he had heard came from the same place. A designer draws something. A builder prices it and says it cannot be done that way. The homeowner sits in the middle, translating, while the schedule slips and each party explains why the other is the problem.
The fix was structural rather than attitudinal. Put the designers and the crews in the same company, answerable to the same name, under one contract. Then there is nobody to point at.
Maxwell Building Services is incorporated in September 2014, built around design-build from the start rather than as a general contractor that later added design.
Every trade but plumbing, electrical and HVAC is Maxwell's own crew, not a rotating list of subs who met each other that morning. The outside contractors the firm does use are licensed, trained and held to the same worksite standards. It is slower to grow that way and considerably easier to stand behind the result.
A place for clients to see and handle cabinetry, tile and stone before ordering. Choosing finishes for a six-figure renovation from a screen was never going to be good enough.
Made-to-order cabinetry becomes the standard on custom work, built to the room rather than assembled from stock widths with filler covering the difference.

Today the firm designs, sources and builds across twenty-five communities across Oakland, Macomb and Wayne Counties, from Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills through Franklin, Northville, Troy and the Grosse Pointes.
The work is mostly houses built between 1920 and 1960: brick Tudors, Colonials and Cape Cods that were built well the first time and deserve to be brought forward rather than flattened.
And the original idea has not changed. One team, one contract, one name on the work, and a five-year warranty behind it.
