The Arden Bath is a luxury primary bathroom remodel in Birmingham, Michigan, designed and built by Maxwell Building Services. Located within a historic Birmingham home, the design combines European influences, handcrafted materials, and modern functionality while preserving the architectural details that give the original home its character.
The centerpiece is a custom imported Turkish marble sink with an integrated backsplash, paired with Waterworks unlacquered brass wall-mounted faucets and Regina Andrew alabaster sconces. A custom masonry arch frames the walk-in shower, where handcrafted Zia clay tile, fan-pattern porcelain flooring, and a linear drain create a warm, spa-inspired environment. TileBar Star & Cross porcelain flooring continues the European influence throughout the bathroom.
A six-foot freestanding soaking tub sits beneath the home’s restored original wood windows, while original oak trim and millwork were carefully preserved and restored throughout the space. The combination of natural stone, handmade tile, unlacquered brass, polished chrome, and original woodwork gives the bathroom a collected character that feels appropriate for the age of the home. What the pictures don’t show is that this bathroom didn’t exist before the renovation. We added an entirely new primary bathroom to a floor of this historic Birmingham home that previously had no bathroom at all.
Creating the space meant building the bathroom from the ground up, including bringing new plumbing, drainage, electrical, and ventilation into a part of the home that was never designed to accommodate them.
The finished space feels like it has always belonged here—and that was the goal. We were able to add the comfort and functionality of a modern primary bathroom while making it feel appropriate to the architecture and character of the original home.
