The Ferndale Jewelbox is a colorful bathroom remodel in Ferndale, Michigan, designed and built by Maxwell Building Services. Rather than playing it safe in a smaller footprint, the design embraces bold color, pattern, and texture to create a bathroom with its own personality while making thoughtful use of every inch of available space.
Handmade-look blue wall tile wraps the bathing area and continues around the room, creating rich variation and texture against the vibrant orange walls. A glass enclosure keeps the tub and shower visually open, while geometric black-and-white floor tile adds another layer of pattern. Brass plumbing fixtures and lighting bring warmth to the blue and orange palette and introduce a vintage-inspired detail that complements the character of the home.
Custom natural wood cabinetry provides valuable storage without overwhelming the room, balancing the stronger colors with the warmth of real wood. The combination of custom cabinetry, patterned tile, brass finishes, glass, and unexpected color makes The Ferndale Jewelbox a great example of how thoughtful bathroom design can transform a relatively small space into one of the most memorable rooms in a home.

What the pictures don’t show is how much planning went into making a smaller bathroom work this hard. With limited square footage, every fixture, cabinet, and transition had to be carefully considered to maximize usable space without making the room feel crowded.
The plumbing, electrical, cabinetry, and glass enclosure all had to work within a very tight footprint while still leaving the bathroom feeling open and comfortable. The custom floor-to-ceiling cabinetry was designed to take advantage of vertical space and provide additional storage without sacrificing the layout.
The finished bathroom may be small, but that became part of what makes it special. Instead of trying to make the room disappear, we leaned into its size and created a true jewel box filled with color, craftsmanship, and personality.
